PHOTOGRAPHS

The photographs are crucial as they're often all I have to capture the characteristics of your pet. It's preferable to have an assortment - one good clear photo which I will work from, with some others for reference is ideal. I prefer to draw horses without a bridle as the bone structure is more visible.

The most important thing to me is that the eye(s) can be seen clearly - it's those that make portraits come alive! It's best therefore not to use a flash as this effects their colour. Photos taken on a light but not too sunny day are perfect, as too much sun can cause strong shadows.

Try to take your photos at the same level as the subject so they’re not looking up at you as this distorts the proportions of their nose in relation to the rest of their body. If you have a small animal then raising it up on a chair is beneficial. The background is of no importance.

Examples of acceptable photographs:

Bad photo, too much shadow, lack of details in ears and eyes. Not a good angle as eye not fully visible

Nice photo but lacking in fine detail and depth because the camera focus is quite poor

Perfect photo, good lighting with fine detail in the coat, eyes and muzzle
